The unemployment rate is the second-lowest among mid-size metropolitan areas in the United States.** Resilient sectors make up the bulk of jobs in the Birmingham MSA: Trade, Transportation, and Utilities comprise nearly 20% of jobs, Government makes up another 15.8%, and Education & Health Services rounds out 14.1% of total employment. These sectors combined made up 40% of job growth in the Birmingham MSA.***
